Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery or a “nose job,” can be performed to correct a wide range of nasal deficiencies and produce a nose that is in better harmony with the rest of the face. This popular procedure can improve the proportions and appearance of the nose as well as structural defects that impair breathing function.

Nose surgery can correct the following aspects of the nose:

  • Large, wide, or narrow nostrils
  • Bulbous tip
  • Wide bridge

  • Bumps or indentations on the bridge
  • Drooping or upturned tip
  • Angle between the nose and upper lip

Breathing Difficulties

  • Deviated septum
  • Other structural flaws

Rhinoplasty Candidates

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are ages 13 or older with good structural support and skin quality on the nose. Potential patients should be in good overall health and not smoke. Candidates should desire to undergo a rhinoplasty for their own reasons and have realistic expectations of the results this procedure can achieve.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is performed with the patient under general anesthesia, and it can be performed using either the open or closed technique. With both techniques, the soft tissues of the nose are raised, and the underlying structures are reshaped as necessary to achieve the desired results.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is performed through an inconspicuous incision across the columella (narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils).

Closed Rhinoplasty

The incisions for this method are hidden inside of the nostrils and will result in no visible scarring.

Recovery and Results

After the procedure, the nose will be bandaged, and an external splint will be placed for support. This supportive packing inside the nostrils will be removed after about a week, at which time most patients can return to work. Swelling will resolve within a few weeks, but it may take up to a year for the new nose to take on its final shape.
