Otoplasty is a procedure that is designed to pin back the ears closer to the head or reduce their size. This results in more natural looking ears. This procedure can be performed on the very young as well as older individuals. The otoplasty procedure varies with every patient and their degree of ear deformity. During the operation, an incision is made behind the ear to hide the marks of surgical intervention. Sutures are strategically placed to shape the cartilage in normal folds, which are missing pre-operatively. The skin is re-draped, any excess skin removed, and the incision behind the ear is closed. To reduce the swelling or collection of fluid beneath the skin, a dressing is placed on the head to put gentle pressure on the ears.
